Each year the United States recognizes the contributions of African-Americans who were, and still are, instrumental in “building” this nation. What Carter G. Woodson started as Negro History Week in 1926 has morphed into a 28-day long celebration during February known as Black History Month. In January 2023 we launched our “Black 365 Initiative” to share our history all yearlong with the world. E
What better way to kick off our Black365 Initiative than with the inventor (Lonnie Johnson) of one of the most popular toys to ever hit the market...THE SUPER SOAKER WATER GUN!!! Each week we endeavor to introduce you to some of the not-so-well-known Black Pioneers from 12 categories.
African-American engineer and inventor Lonnie Johnson earned his master's degree in nuclear engineering from Tuskegee University and went on to work for the U.S. Air Force and the NASA space program. After tinkering with the invention of a high-powered water gun, Johnson's Super Soaker became a top-selling item by the early 1990s. He has since been developing the Johnson Thermoelectric Energy Converter (JTEC), an engine that converts heat directly into electricity, which Johnson's sees as the path to low-cost solar power.

We're well on our way to Week 52 as we presents this week's Black Pioneer Claudette Colvin. While Rosa Parks may have gotten all the publicity, Claudette still put up one hell-of-a-fight!!!
“On March 2, 1955, an impassioned teenager, fed up with the daily injustices of Jim Crow segregation, refused to give her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Instead of being celebrated as Rosa Parks would be just nine months later, fifteen-year-old Claudette Colvin found herself shunned by her classmates and dismissed by community leaders. Undaunted, a year later she dared to challenge segregation again as a key plaintiff in Browder v. Gayle, the landmark case that struck down the segregation laws of Montgomery and swept away the legal underpinnings of the Jim Crow South.”

This year, on January 16, 2023, we celebrated the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr (“A Drum Major For Peace”). A man known around the world. Many also know of is illustrious wife Coretta Scott King. Yet, many are not as familiar with their youngest child Bernice Albertine King. I hope to change that with this week’s profile. So, in honor of the legacy created by Martin & Coretta King I present to you their baby girl Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King. She’s passionately carrying on the tireless work of her parents and has carved a path that she feels is her own. As CEO, she’s re-branded and expanded the reach of The King Center as well as created The Beloved Community (another of her father’s dreams). I pray I do their legacy justice and that each of you keep her in your prayers.
