What is Kwanzaa anyway?

NMAAHC Oral History Specialist Kelly Navies discusses the history and cultural significance of Kwanzaa. Basically, it's a non-religious celebration honoring the culture, community, family and uniqueness of African-Americans and members of the African diaspora (those African descendants not currently living in Africa, but around the world). LENGTH: 7 mins, 22 secs

Habari Gani: A little about the seven symbols of Kwanzaa.

day 1: HABARI GANI? Umoja (Unity)

    Kwanzaa: Day 1 (Dec. 26th) - UMOJA

HAPPY KWANZAA (Day 1):  Our Kwanzaa principal for today Dec. 26th is "UMOJA", which is Swahili for UNITY (in our family, community, nation and race). We're encouraged to practice Umoja not only during Kwanzaa, but throughout the year. Always remember that children are foundational to any Kwanzaa celebration. As such, please keep them engaged and enjoy this kid-centered video. TTYL, Pastor Carthel.  Running Time: 2 Mins, 14 Seconds.

day 2: HABARI GANI? Kujichagulia (Self Determination)

day 3: Habari gani? uJIMA (Collective work & economics)

day 4: Habari gani? uJamma (Cooperative economics)

day 5: Habari gani? Nia (Purpose)

day 6: Habari gani? Kummba (creativity)

day 7: Habari gani? imani (faith)
